Đài NDTV hôm 14-7 đưa tin Tổng thống Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa đã từ chức sau khi đáp máy bay tới Singapore. Chủ tịch Quốc hội Sri Lanka xác nhận đã nhận được thư từ chức của ông Rajapaksa.

Động thái từ chức của ông Rajapaksa diễn ra cùng ngày người biểu tình ở thủ đô Colombo tuyên bố sẽ ngừng chiếm đóng các tòa nhà bao gồm Cung điện Tổng thống và Văn phòng Thủ tướng.

Người biểu tình ở thủ đô Colombo đã đốt pháo ăn mừng sau khi ông Rajapaksa từ chức. Ông Rajapaksa được hưởng quyền miễn trừ bắt giữ khi vẫn còn là tổng thống. Nhà lãnh đạo này được cho là trốn ra nước ngoài, sau đó mới tuyên bố từ chức để tránh bị bắt giữ.

Chính phủ Singapore cho hay ông Rajapaksa đáp máy bay tới quốc đảo này trong một chuyến đi cá nhân và chưa nộp đơn xin tị nạn. Ông Rajapaksa cùng vợ Ioma và 2 vệ sĩ đáp máy bay từ Maldives đến Singapore vào tối 14-7 (giờ địa phương). 

Trong khi đó, Thủ tướng Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe đã yêu cầu lực lượng an ninh khôi phục trật tự và ban bố tình trạng khẩn cấp.

Các nhân chứng nói rằng họ nhìn thấy hàng chục nhà hoạt động rời khỏi văn phòng của ông Wickremeinghe sau khi cảnh sát và lực lượng an ninh vũ trang xuất hiện. 

Đại diện của người biểu tình ở thủ đô Colombo khẳng định họ sẽ tiếp tục đấu tranh dù rút khỏi Cung điện Tổng thống và Văn phòng Thủ tướng.

NDTV on July 14 reported that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had resigned after taking a flight to Singapore. The Speaker of the National Assembly of Sri Lanka confirmed that he had received Mr. Rajapaksa's letter of resignation.

Rajapaksa's resignation came the same day protesters in the capital Colombo announced they would stop occupying buildings including the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister's Office.

Protesters in the capital Colombo set off fireworks to celebrate after Rajapaksa's resignation. Mr. Rajapaksa enjoyed immunity from arrest while still president. This leader is said to have fled abroad, then announced his resignation to avoid arrest.

The Singapore government said Mr Rajapaksa had flown to the island nation on a personal trip and had not yet applied for asylum. Mr. Rajapaksa, his wife Ioma and 2 bodyguards boarded a plane from Maldives to Singapore on the evening of July 14 (local time).

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered security forces to restore order and declare a state of emergency.

Witnesses said they saw dozens of activists leave Mr Wickremesinghe's office after police and armed security forces showed up.

Representatives of protesters in the capital Colombo confirmed that they will continue to fight despite withdrawing from the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister's Office.
